BACK ON A ROLL

Sunday (19/05) saw vipers peewees play a match of winning spirit. Having lost to the Flyers in a previous match, the team had only one thing on their mind - Pay Back! Vipers scored first, with a cracking goal in the 4th minute from Sonny Brayne, but a quick and sudden response from a determined Folkestone, drew the scores level almost immediately. Vipers play-making dominated for most of the first period with strong offensive moves penetrating the Folkestone defence. Connor Williams finished the first period with a closing goal (2:1), giving Vipers the edge to second period. Solid goal tending from Edward Mortimer and strong defensive play during this period also played a significant role in this halftime lead. The second period started as intense as the last period finished, but the vipers superior stick handling and skating ability finally began to kick-in. Silky stick work and play making from Alex Bell shook the Folkestone defence early in the second period, and a hat-trick (5:1) from young Bell gave the vipers a 4 goal advantage. Tiredness began to show towards the end of the period and a relentless Folkestone attack began to pressurise the viper's defence with three sudden goals, pulling Folkestone within 1 goal (5:4). Viper's raised the pace and responded with 2 goals (7:4), stopping Folkestone dead in their tracks. However, with 14 seconds of game time remaining, vipers conceded a penalty shot and the pressure was now on Kris Sheppard to respond to the call of his team. As players, and parents looked on and held their breath, Kris held strong, reading the opponents moves, and responded with a sensational stick save. A fantastic finish to a great game. Final Score: Vipers 7 - Folkestone 5 |

So far this season, the vipers have welcomed 6 new players to the ranks of the peewee team. Ross and James Cruikshank, Ash Bayer, Nathan Doble, Kearny Cook-Abbott and Arron are all total new-commers to sport, having no previous hockey experience. The lads are currently being put through the clubs intensive peewee training program and it is hoped that many of them will shortly be taking their place within the peewee team. These new and young players have been making very good progress over the last few months, and all have shown the dedication and skill to become talented hockey players. The coaches have been very impressed by the speed at which these players are developing their skills and the professionalism they show at the training sessions. The future looks very promising for these players. Keep up the good work lads!!
